I am a contemporary artist working in northwest Oregon. My work is about the confluence of randomness and order, as it occurs in nature, culture and in our imaginations. I select approaches to material and methods that suit these ends. I work in ways that have somewhat unpredictable outcomes.
I often mix types of paint; oil, lacquer, enamel, water color or ink with found materials from the studio or outside. The interactions of these materials create fractal-like patterns in the images on the surface of my work and these designs can be read in their totality as well. Often the images tend towards forms found in nature from both a macro and micro viewpoint. Images appear of landscape, the sea, figures and what could be under the microscope or seen in the sky.
In sculpture I carve, bend, model, and assemble to combine forms of wood, stone, clay, wire, and found materials that are reminiscent of things that you have seen. But with their dissonance the meanings and reference points are deflected. My studio is a kind of laboratory where I conduct experiments to find the ways to create objects that function psychologically in the world in a manner that is similar to the way natural and found objects do.
